Resume before and after: one page, rewritten line by line

Who this example is for

This page is for someone who already has a resume and keeps sending it without a reply. It is not a template to copy. The applicant, the shops and the percentages below are invented so the before-and-after can be shown in full. If you have never had a job, start with the fresher resume format instead. If you are changing countries, read the country rules before you decide whether a photo or a date of birth belongs on the page.

The target job in the example is a US retail team-lead role. The same person applying in Germany would keep the stronger bullets and add a photo and date of birth, because that market expects them. The wording rules do not change. The personal-data rules do.

The weak version

This is the whole “before” page. It is one column of duties, an objective, and a photo line. An applicant tracking system can read the words, but a recruiter still cannot tell what the person actually did.

• Worked well in a team

Crew Member, Harbour Café, 2020–2022

What was wrong

  • The objective describes what Alex wants from the employer. The top of a US resume should say what Alex offers the team-lead job.
  • “Responsible for” and “duties included” are labels, not results. They fit any shop job in the country.
  • Dates are years only. A six-month gap and a six-year gap look the same. Month and year is the format that survives a quick check. See how to format dates.
  • “Photo available” and a birth year do not belong on a US retail resume. They add nothing the hiring manager needs and they raise an age question the employer should not be asking. The photo and date-of-birth guide lists where those fields are normal.
  • Skills are traits (“hardworking”) and one brand with no level (“Microsoft”). The ATS check on this site looks for skills written as plain words a job advert would use.
  • There is no file-name, no city, and no sign that the page was written for a team-lead advert rather than for every shop on the street.

The rewritten version

Same person, same two jobs, no invented promotion. The only new facts are the kind a real applicant can pull from a rota, a till report or a handover note. If you do not have the number, do not type one.

After · US team-lead application

Seattle, WA · alex.morgan@email.com · (206) 555-0148
Retail team lead with three years of closing a neighbourhood grocery and two years in a café, including cash-up, delivery intake and training new weekend staff.

Experience
Sales Associate, Northwind Market — Seattle, WA
March 2022 – Present
• Close the store three nights a week: count the tills, log shortages and leave a written handover. Shortages fell from about $40 a week to under $10 after the handover sheet was introduced.
• Take in the Tuesday delivery, check it against the invoice and correct the shelf counts the same morning. Mis-picks that used to sit until Friday are now fixed the same day.
• Train new weekend staff on the till and the returns desk. Four people trained in 2025, all still on the rota.

Crew Member, Harbour Café — Seattle, WA
June 2020 – February 2022
• Opened the café twice a week: started the machines, counted the float and set the pastry case before the 7 a.m. rush.
• Covered the till during the morning peak, usually 40–60 tickets between 8 and 10 a.m.

Education
High school diploma, Roosevelt High School — 2016

Skills
Cash-up and shift handover · Delivery intake · Till and card payments · Staff training · Microsoft Excel (stock counts) · Written handover notes

What changed, line by line

  1. The objective became a summary with the job name in it. “Team lead”, “closing”, “delivery intake” and “training” are words a grocery team-lead advert actually uses. “Dynamic company” is not.
  2. Each bullet now has a task and a trace. The till shortage line says what Alex did (handover sheet) and what moved (about $40 to under $10). The number is small on purpose. A modest true number is stronger than a round number you cannot defend.
  3. The café bullets stay at crew level. Alex did not become a manager there. The rewrite says “opened” and “covered the till”, not “managed operations”.
  4. Dates gained a month. March 2022 – Present and June 2020 – February 2022. The one-month gap between the café and the grocery is visible and does not need a paragraph.
  5. Photo and birth year came off because this version is for a US employer. For a German CV the photo would go back on, in a plain head-and-shoulders crop, and the birth date would be written as a full date. Switching that is what the country format in the CV builder is for.
  6. Skills name tools and tasks. “Microsoft” became “Microsoft Excel (stock counts)”. “Team player” was cut. The training bullet already shows the teamwork.

Mistakes this rewrite avoids

  • Do not paste this page into an application. The employers do not exist. Hiring managers search names.
  • Do not add a percentage you did not measure. “Improved customer satisfaction by 40%” with no survey behind it is a common rejection in the interview, not on the ATS.
  • Do not hide a short job by stretching the dates. The café ends in February and the grocery starts in March. That is the truthful version.
  • Do not send the designed two-column export to a portal that asks for a text file. Use Text PDF or Word from the resume builder, then run the ATS check. The check looks for a summary, dates, and skills as plain text. It cannot see whether your story is true.
  • Do not attach the same page to a café supervisor advert and a grocery team-lead advert. The summary should name the job you are answering. The ATS-friendly resume guide covers keyword matching without stuffing a list of terms at the bottom.

How to do the same to your page

  1. Write the job title from the advert in the first line of the summary. If the advert says “shift supervisor”, do not write “retail ninja”.
  2. Take the most recent role. Replace the first two bullets with one action you repeated and one result you could point to on a screen or a sheet.
  3. Add the month to every date. Use the same order on the whole page.
  4. Remove the photo and the date of birth if the job is in the US, Canada, the UK or Ireland. Put them back only when the destination expects them.
  5. Read the skills line against the advert. Keep a skill only if a bullet above it shows you using it.
  6. Save the file as Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf. Open it and try to select the text. If you cannot select it, the portal cannot read it either.

A longer list of the usual failures is on 11 resume mistakes. Cover letters have a separate failure mode: leaving the sample company name in the file. That is covered in the cover letter examples.

Questions

How long should this kind of rewrite take?

If your dates and employers are already written down, the summary and the top two bullets take about half an hour. The rest is checking that you did not add a number you cannot explain. The builder does not write those sentences for you.

What if I have no number at all?

Use a count you do know: how many people you trained, how many nights you closed, how many covers or tickets in a busy hour. If you truly have no count, describe the scope (“the only closer on Sunday nights”) instead of inventing a percentage.

Where do I put this in QuickCVLab?

Open the resume builder, choose a one-column template such as Lumen or Meridian, set the country format, and replace the sample text section by section. Then use Application view or Text PDF for the portal.
