Swiss CV Format: How to Write a CV for Switzerland
A Swiss CV (Lebenslauf in German, CV in French and Italian) is two pages, has a professional photo, and starts with a short personal-details block: date of birth, nationality and work permit (B, C, L or G). It lists experience newest first, gives every language with a level (A1–C2), and is sent as one PDF together with a cover letter, work references and diplomas.
Swiss CV structure, section by section
- Personal details — name, address (postcode and town at least), phone, email, date of birth, nationality, permit. Photo top right.
- Profile (optional) — two or three lines on what you do and the role you want.
- Work experience — newest first. Month and year for each role (03.2021 – heute in German, 03.2021 – present in English), employer, town, job title, and three to five results.
- Education — degrees, apprenticeships (Lehre / EFZ) and further training (Weiterbildung) with dates and institutions.
- Languages — mother tongue plus each language with a CEFR level, e.g. German C1, French B2. In a multilingual country this section is read closely.
- IT skills and certificates — software, tools and the certificates that matter for the job.
- Interests and references (optional) — a short line of interests is common; referees can be listed or “available on request”.
Swiss recruiters value completeness and accuracy over design. Gaps of more than a few months are noticed — add a one-line entry such as Language course and job search, 01.2024 – 06.2024 rather than leaving a hole.
Personal details and work permit
| Field | On a Swiss CV? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | ✅ Yes | Date of birth: 13.12.1990 |
| Nationality | ✅ Yes | Nationality: Indian |
| Work permit | ✅ Yes, if you are not Swiss | Permit: B · or · EU citizen (free movement) |
| Marital status | 🟡 Optional | Marital status: Married |
| Address | ✅ Usual | Bahnhofstrasse 10, 8001 Zürich |
| ID or AHV number | ❌ Never | — |
Permit types you will see: B (residence), C (settlement), L (short-term), G (cross-border commuter). If you do not yet have a permit, say so plainly — for example EU citizen, can start with a B permit or Non-EU, requires a work permit. Hiding it only delays the question. For the rules in other countries, see date of birth and personal details on a CV.
Is a photo expected on a Swiss CV?
Yes, for most Swiss employers. Use a recent, professional headshot: plain light background, business clothing that suits the industry, head and shoulders, placed top right or in the sidebar. Some international companies in Zurich, Basel and Geneva accept a CV without a photo, but for a Swiss company a missing photo can look like a missing page. Templates such as Berlin, Europa and Diplomat place the photo correctly.
How long should a Swiss CV be?
Two pages for most candidates, including mid-level roles. One page is fine for students and recent graduates; senior candidates can use three pages if every line earns its place. Work references and diplomas are attachments, so they do not count towards the length. For other countries, compare the CV length by country table.
Which language: German, French, Italian or English?
Write in the language of the job advertisement. German-speaking cantons (Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, St. Gallen) expect German; Romandy (Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel) expects French; Ticino expects Italian. English is normal in banking, pharma, tech and international organisations. Two small details show you know the market: Swiss Standard German writes ss instead of ß (Strasse, not Straße), and numbers often use an apostrophe as the thousands separator (CHF 95'000).
The Swiss application dossier
Swiss employers usually expect a complete application file (Bewerbungsdossier), sent as one PDF in this order:
- Cover letter (Motivationsschreiben / lettre de motivation) — one page.
- CV with photo — two pages.
- Work references (Arbeitszeugnisse / certificats de travail) — newest first.
- Diplomas and key certificates.
Employees in Switzerland are entitled to a written work reference when they leave a job, which is why recruiters expect to see them. If your experience is from abroad, attach the reference letters or experience certificates you have. Keep the file small and name it clearly, e.g. Anna-Muster-Bewerbung-Data-Analyst.pdf.
Swiss cover letter: the place and date line
Put the town and the date on their own line, above the subject line, in the language of the letter:
| Language | Place and date line |
|---|---|
| German | Zürich, 5. Oktober 2026 |
| French | Genève, le 5 octobre 2026 |
| Italian | Lugano, 5 ottobre 2026 |
| English | Zurich, 5 October 2026 |
Then a subject line naming the job (Bewerbung als Data Analyst), a formal greeting, three short paragraphs, and a formal close (Freundliche Grüsse — again with ss). The free cover letter builder matches your CV’s font and header; for academic or training applications, use the motivation letter generator.
Mistakes that cost interviews in Switzerland
- No permit line — the recruiter has to guess whether they can hire you.
- Languages without levels — “German: good” says nothing; “German B2 (Goethe certificate)” does.
- A US-style one-page resume with no photo or dates — it reads as incomplete.
- Missing references — send the dossier, not just the CV, when the ad asks for “vollständige Unterlagen”.
- Gaps without explanation and job titles that do not match the reference letters.
Swiss CV FAQ
What is the best CV format for Switzerland in English?
A two-page, reverse-chronological CV with a professional photo and a short personal-details block (date of birth, nationality and work permit), followed by experience, education, language levels and IT skills. Write it in English only when the job ad is in English — common in finance, pharma, tech and international organisations in Zurich, Basel and Geneva — and send it as one PDF with your cover letter and references.
How long should a Swiss CV be?
Two pages for most candidates, including mid-level roles. Students and graduates can use one page; senior candidates can go to three pages if every line is relevant. Work references and diplomas are separate attachments and do not count towards the CV length.
Is a photo on a Swiss CV still expected?
Yes, for most Swiss employers. A recent, professional headshot at the top of the CV is the norm. Some international companies accept CVs without a photo, but leaving it out for a Swiss employer can make the application look incomplete.
Do I need to put my work permit on a Swiss CV?
Yes. State your nationality and permit type in the personal details — for example Nationality: Indian · Permit: B. EU and EFTA citizens should say so, because it shows the employer they can be hired without a quota permit.
How do I write the place and date in a Swiss cover letter?
Put the town and date on their own line above the subject line, in the language of the letter: Zürich, 5. Oktober 2026 in German, Genève, le 5 octobre 2026 in French, Lugano, 5 ottobre 2026 in Italian, or Zurich, 5 October 2026 in English.
What are Arbeitszeugnisse and should I send them?
Arbeitszeugnisse are written work references that Swiss employers give when you leave a job. Swiss recruiters usually expect copies of them, together with your main diplomas, as part of the application dossier. If you worked abroad, attach the reference letters or experience certificates you have.
