Cover Letter Examples and Templates
A cover letter is the one-page letter you send with your resume to explain why you want a particular job and why you are a strong match. Below are 26 free cover letter examples — by experience level, by job and for special situations such as a referral, a career gap or a remote role. Open any of them in the free builder, switch between samples in one click, and download your letter as a PDF or an editable Word file. No sign-up, nothing uploaded.

A good cover letter fits on one page (about 150–400 words) and has three or four short paragraphs: the role you want and who you are, one or two results that prove you can do the job, why this company, and a polite close. Address a named person when you can, and write a new version for every application.
Choose a cover letter template
Each template opens in the builder with its example text. Your name and contact details come from the same profile as your resume, so the header, font and accent colour match. Enter the company and job title once — they stay in place when you switch to another sample.

How to write a cover letter in four steps
- Opening — name the job and give one line about who you are now. If someone referred you, say so here.
- Evidence — one or two results with numbers: what you did, how big it was, what changed.
- Why this company — a specific reason taken from the job ad, their products or their values.
- Close — thank the reader, say you have attached your resume and offer to talk.
The builder’s letter check reviews these points as you type: length, paragraphs, whether you name the company and the job, placeholders left in [brackets] and overused words such as “hard-working” or “team player”.

Dear Ms. Lee,
I am applying for the Marketing Manager position at BrightWave. With seven years of experience planning and running campaigns across three markets, I have a track record of turning a clear brief into measurable growth, and I would like to bring that to your team.
In my current role I lead a team of six and manage an annual budget of $1.2 million. Last year we grew organic traffic threefold in 18 months and launched in four new markets, adding $2 million in annual recurring revenue. I am most proud of the reporting routine I set up, which lets every team member see which work actually moves the numbers.
BrightWave's focus on simple, honest communication is exactly how I like to work. I would welcome the chance to discuss how my experience can support your plans for the coming year. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Alex Morgan

Your first job — school, part-time work and clubs as evidence.
Show the example (152 words)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am excited to apply for the Junior Operations Assistant role at Nova Labs. Although this would be my first full-time position, I have spent the last two years building the habits the job description asks for: staying organised, communicating clearly and solving small problems before they become big ones.
While studying, I worked 15 hours a week at a busy café, where I trained four new team members and kept the weekly stock order accurate. As treasurer of my university's hiking club, I tracked a budget of $8,000 in a shared spreadsheet and organised trips for up to 40 people. I am confident with Excel, Google Workspace and learning new tools quickly.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to start my career at Nova Labs and to learn from your team. Thank you for considering my application — I would be happy to talk at any time that suits you.
Kind regards,
Alex Morgan

Cover letter for a recent graduate
Dissertation, internships and projects in place of long experience.
Show the example (130 words)
Dear Mr. Ortiz,
I recently graduated with a BSc in Economics and am applying for the Graduate Data Analyst programme at Harbor Analytics. Your graduate scheme's mix of client projects and structured training is exactly the start I am looking for.
For my final-year dissertation I analysed ten years of regional housing data in R and built a model that explained 78% of price variation, which earned a first-class mark. During a summer internship at a local council I cleaned and merged three survey datasets and presented the findings to the planning team, who used them in their annual report.
I enjoy turning messy data into clear answers, and I would welcome the chance to do that for Harbor Analytics's clients. Thank you for your time; I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Morgan

Dear Recruitment Team,
I am a second-year accounting student and would like to apply for the Summer Finance Intern position at Atlas Group. I am looking for hands-on experience in a team where interns are trusted with real work, and your programme is known for exactly that.
This year I completed modules in financial reporting and management accounting with an average of 72%, and I volunteer as a bookkeeper for a small community theatre, reconciling monthly accounts and preparing the treasurer's report. These experiences taught me to be careful with detail and to ask questions early.
I am available from June to September and would be glad to discuss how I can contribute to your team. Thank you for considering my application.
Best regards,
Alex Morgan

Dear Store Manager,
I am a full-time college student and would like to apply for the Part-Time Sales Assistant position at Greenleaf Books. I can work weekends and two evenings a week during term, and longer hours during holidays.
I love books and talking to people about them. At school I helped run our library's reading club, recommending titles to younger students and organising a book swap that collected more than 300 books. I am reliable, friendly with customers and comfortable using a till and card machine from a previous holiday job.
I would be very happy to come in for a chat or a trial shift. Thank you for considering my application.

Cover letter for an experienced professional
Lead with your biggest results and the scale you managed.
Show the example (140 words)
Dear Ms. Shah,
With more than ten years in warehouse and distribution operations, I am applying for the Operations Manager role at Meridian Logistics. I have led sites of up to 120 people and I know how to improve safety, speed and cost at the same time rather than trading one for another.
At my current company I redesigned the picking process across two warehouses, cutting average order-to-dispatch time by 22% and reducing errors by a third. I introduced a daily ten-minute performance huddle that is now used across the region, and I negotiated a carrier contract that saves $340,000 a year.
Meridian Logistics's plans to open two new fulfilment centres are the kind of challenge I do my best work on. I would welcome a conversation about how my experience could help you hit those launch dates. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Dear Members of the Search Committee,
I am writing to express my interest in the Chief Operating Officer position at Lakeshore Health. Over twenty years I have led operations for healthcare organisations through growth, mergers and difficult turnarounds, always with patient experience as the measure that matters most.
As Vice President of Operations at a 1,400-bed hospital group, I led the integration of two networks, delivering $18 million in annual savings while improving patient-satisfaction scores for six consecutive quarters. I built a leadership team that has since produced three chief executives, and I sit on the regional board for clinical quality.
I share Lakeshore Health's commitment to accessible, community-based care, and I would value the opportunity to discuss your strategic priorities and how I could help deliver them. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Hiring Manager,
After eight years as a secondary-school teacher, I am moving into customer success and would like to apply for the Customer Success Manager role at Northstar Software. The core of both jobs is the same: understanding what people need, explaining things clearly and helping them succeed with something new.
As head of year I managed relationships with 180 families, handled difficult conversations calmly and introduced a new learning platform that 95% of students were using within a month. Over the past year I completed a customer-success certification and volunteered to run onboarding for a local charity adopting new software.
I am excited by Northstar Software's focus on education clients, where my background would help from the first day. Thank you for considering my application; I would welcome the chance to talk.

Cover letter after a career gap
Explain a career break briefly and show your skills are current.
Show the example (138 words)
Dear Mr. Reed,
I am applying for the Office Manager position at Cedar & Co. After a three-year career break to care for a family member, I am ready to return to full-time work and to bring back the organisational skills I built over eight years in office management.
Before my break I ran the office for a 45-person architecture practice: I managed suppliers and a $250,000 facilities budget, moved the team to a new building without losing a working day, and introduced a booking system for meeting rooms. During my time away I kept my skills current with courses in Microsoft 365 and bookkeeping, and I managed the household finances and care schedule like a small project.
I would welcome the chance to discuss how I can help Cedar & Co run smoothly. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Engineering Hiring Team,
I am applying for the Backend Software Engineer position at Pixelforge. I have four years of experience building and running APIs in Go and Python, and I enjoy the part of the job where reliability and simplicity meet.
At my current company I led the move of our payments service to an event-driven design, reducing failed transactions by 40% and cutting p95 latency from 900 to 180 milliseconds. I wrote the on-call runbooks the team still uses, mentor two junior developers and contribute to an open-source rate-limiting library with 2,000 stars on GitHub.
Pixelforge's engineering blog post about deleting more code than you write stuck with me — that is how I like to build. I would love to talk about the challenges your platform team is working on. Thank you for your time.

Dear Ms. Rossi,
I am excited to apply for the Data Analyst role at Brightline Retail. I have three years of experience turning sales and customer data into decisions that teams actually use, and I enjoy explaining numbers to people who do not work with data every day.
In my current role I built a Power BI dashboard that replaced eleven weekly spreadsheets and is now opened by 60 managers every Monday. My analysis of loyalty-card data identified a drop in repeat purchases after delivery delays, which led to a change in courier and a 9% rise in second orders. I work daily with SQL, Python and Excel.
I would welcome the opportunity to bring the same practical approach to Brightline Retail's analytics team. Thank you for considering my application.

Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Digital Marketing Specialist position at Bloom Cosmetics. I have spent four years planning content and paid campaigns for consumer brands, and I love the mix of creativity and testing that good digital marketing needs.
At my current agency I manage social and search campaigns for six clients with a combined monthly budget of $90,000. For a skincare client I rebuilt the paid-social funnel around short video, improving return on ad spend from 2.1 to 4.3 in one quarter. I also run our monthly reporting, so I am used to showing clients what worked, what did not and what we will try next.
Bloom Cosmetics's community-first approach on Instagram is one I admire, and I would love to help it grow further. Thank you for your time — I look forward to hearing from you.

Cover letter format, font and length
- Length: one page, usually 150–400 words. An email cover letter can be three short paragraphs.
- Font: use the same font as your resume at 10.5–12 pt — for example Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Georgia or Garamond. The builder copies your resume font and colour automatically.
- Layout: your header, the date, the recipient and company, an optional subject line, a greeting, the body and a sign-off with your name. Keep margins at about 2–2.5 cm (0.75–1 inch).
- File: send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word, and name it clearly, for example Alex_Morgan_Cover_Letter.pdf.
- Signature: a typed name is enough online. To sign it, draw or type your signature in the builder — it appears above your name in the PDF.
Tailor every letter in minutes
- Match a job ad: paste the job description and the builder lists its key terms, showing which your letter already uses and which are missing.
- Find & replace: reuse a letter for a new company by replacing the company name everywhere at once.
- My saved letters: keep a copy for each application and switch between them — then note which one you sent in the job application tracker.
- Opening and closing lines: start from a proven first or last sentence and make it your own.
Applying to a university, a scholarship or a job in Germany, France or the Netherlands? You may need a motivation letter instead — see the difference.
Cover letter mistakes to avoid
- Repeating your resume instead of explaining what you would bring to this job.
- Opening with “To whom it may concern” when a name is easy to find.
- Sending the same letter everywhere with only the company name changed.
- Claims without proof — “excellent communicator” with no example.
- Leaving the wrong company name in a reused letter. Use the builder’s find & replace before you send.
FAQ
How long should a cover letter be?
One page, usually 150–400 words in three or four short paragraphs. If the employer gives a word or character limit, follow it exactly.
What font and size should a cover letter use?
Use the same font as your resume at 10.5–12 pt, for example Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Georgia or Garamond, with single line spacing and a blank line between paragraphs.
Who should I address a cover letter to?
The hiring manager or recruiter by name if you can find it in the job ad, on the company website or on LinkedIn. Otherwise use the team, for example “Dear Hiring Team” or “Dear Marketing Recruitment Team”.
Do I still need a cover letter?
Send one whenever the application asks for it or offers an optional upload. A short, specific letter helps when you are changing careers, explaining a gap, relocating or applying to a smaller company where a person reads every application.
Can I use the same cover letter for every job?
Reuse your structure and best examples, but rewrite the opening and the “why this company” part for every application. Saving a copy per application in the builder makes this quick.
Should I sign my cover letter?
A typed name under the sign-off is enough for online applications. If you print the letter or the employer asks for a signed copy, add a signature — the builder lets you draw or type one and places it above your name.
Is the cover letter builder free?
Yes. All 26 templates, the letter check, keyword matching and every download are free with no sign-up and no watermark. Your letter stays in your browser.
Can I download my cover letter as PDF or Word?
Yes. Download a text PDF, a design PDF, an editable Word (.docx) file or plain text, or print it. You can also copy the letter text to paste into an email or a job portal.
